Established in 1997 by the Government of India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is a statutory body tasked with fostering the telecom sector's growth and safeguarding consumer interests. Comprising a chairperson and a maximum of two full-time and two part-time members, TRAI functions under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997.
This Act consists of six chapters, laying down the framework for TRAI's operations. In 2000, an ordinance amended the Act, establishing the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal to handle dispute resolution and adjudicatory functions.
